Stay on Your Feet this Winter: Preventing Slips & Falls

Sunday, December 1, 2024 Mackenzie Smith

Winter weather brings the joy of snow and festive activities, but it also increases the risk of slips, trips, and falls. Icy sidewalks, snow-covered driveways, and wet floors can make even a short walk treacherous. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are one of the leading causes of injury during the winter months. Here are some essential tips to prevent slips and falls and stay safe in winter conditions.

1. Wear Proper Footwear

Winter shoes or boots with slip-resistant soles are key to reducing the risk of falling. Avoid smooth soles or high heels, and choose footwear that provides good grip and ankle support. Waterproof boots can also help keep your feet dry and warm, which is important for maintaining balance.

2. Clear Pathways

If you have a home or workplace, make sure to clear walkways of snow and ice. Use salt, sand, or a non-toxic ice melt to reduce slipperiness. Keep driveways, sidewalks, and steps well-maintained throughout the season to ensure safe passage.

3. Walk Cautiously

When walking on ice or snow, take small, deliberate steps. Avoid rushing and try to keep your center of gravity over your front leg. This stance helps maintain balance and stability. Be extra careful when approaching doorways, curbs, and parking lots—areas often hidden under a layer of snow or ice.

4. Use Handrails

Whenever possible, use handrails on stairs or ramps. Even if they seem clear of snow or ice, the added support helps prevent falls, especially if the surface is still slippery.

5. Be Mindful Indoors

Winter weather can also bring wet, slippery conditions inside. When coming in from the cold, take a moment to remove any snow or ice from your shoes before entering the house or office. Place rugs or mats by the door to absorb moisture and reduce the chance of slipping on wet floors.

6. Keep Your Home Well-Lit

Make sure outdoor areas like pathways, driveways, and stairs are properly lit at night. Poor visibility can make icy spots harder to spot and avoid.

7. Stay Active and Flexible

Good balance is key to preventing falls. Stay active during winter months by engaging in activities that promote strength and flexibility, like yoga or tai chi. Strengthening muscles and improving flexibility can help you recover quickly if you do slip.

By taking these precautions and being mindful of your surroundings, you can significantly reduce the risk of winter-related falls and injuries. Staying safe during the colder months allows you to enjoy the beauty of winter without the worry of slipping on ice.
