National Nutrition Month
Have you ever told yourself you want to start eating healthier, learn about nutrition, make informed food choices and/or develop healthy eating habits? If you answered yes to any of those, March is your month! Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant, cancer survivor, traveling, have heart health problems, kidney disease, an extreme athlete, have an eating disorder, autistic just to name a select few… then March is your month to start helping your health!
March is the National Nutrition Month. National Nutrition Month is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Eat Right). March is designated to teach people about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits.
Each week a key message is put out along with three keep steps/tips to follow for that message. 2022 weekly key messaging are:
- Week One: Eat a variety of nutritious foods
- Include healthful foods from all food groups.
- Learn how to read Nutrition Facts labels.
- Incorporate your favorite cultural foods and traditions.
- Week Two: See a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)
- Ask your doctor for a referral to an RDN
- Find an RDN who specializes in your unique needs
- Receive personalized nutrition information to meet your health goals
- Week Three: Plan your meals and snacks
- Choose healthful recipes to make during the week
- Use a grocery list to shop for nutritious foods
- Make healthful food and drink choices when away from home
- Week Four: Create tasty foods at home
- Learn cooking and meal preparation skills
- Try new flavors and foods from around the world
- Enjoy your meal with friends or family, when possible
- Week Five: Put it all together
- Eat a variety of nutritious foods
- See a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)
- Plan your meals and snacks
- Create tasty foods at home
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics break out the National Nutrition Month by gender/age group (kids, seniors, men, women) and by category (food, health, fitness, food safety) and that’s just the beginning.
